Comments about this video:
Why would people choose putting gel in the cat's ear instead of just giving them a pill? I give my cat a dose twice per day with a pill dropper.
Because some cats are very hard to pill, and oral methimazole (pill, liquid, or chews) can cause digestive upset ranging from mild to severe.

That would be lovely if my cat would actually take her medication and I'd rather her not scratch or hate me or run away at the sight of me. This could be done while snuggling kitty actually.
xphoenixrising, You're correct that this can be turned into a positive experience. Like humans, cats have pressure points on their ears that make a massage pleasant. Also, being groomed by an alpha cat is a sign of approval...and we are alpha cats to them...even if they don't always act like it.I just requested membership to the recommended Yahoo group since this is all new to me. I've had dogs with epilepsy, hypothyroidism and separation anxiety so I've done my fair share of administering medications. Are the fingertip covers sufficient to administer the gel? I had been advised to use disposable gloves to avoid contact with my skin.
I've been using the gel for years and just a single finger cot. I've managed to do something silly while not paying attention, and got a it of gel on myself maybe two or three times. When that happens, I wipe it off. Done. You're dealing with small amounts, and it doesn't absorb instantly. Gloves are bulky, messier, and often frighten the cat...and you can't make it a "grooming" session with no sense of touch.

i Just found out my cat needs either the Tapasole ear treatment or the radioactibve iodine. I am going on vacation for two + weeks and my cat caretaker is scared to do the gel. I would like to do the radiation but would have to board the cat for 2-1/2 weeks. Any suggestions?
Join the Yahoo group linked in the video description, and list all the details of the situation there. You'll get lots of suggestions. Include details about the timing of things as well as the blood test results and other information about your cat.
This is an excellent video! Thanks>.. Been awhile since I had to do this and now one of my other cats now is going to use this. I had a hard time the 1st time getting the proper amount of the syringe. I forgot all about that. I am going to try your method of using my palm tomorrow and see if that helps.
Just be sure to start with a low dose, and I really, really suggest joining the Yahoo group linked in the description. Forrest. I'm going to ask my vet about this transdermal version of this medicine. My 14.5 year old cat is taking Methimazole in pills for what I believe the vet described as HypOthyroid rather than HypErthyroid. I've tried pill pockets(worked only once), then mixing in food, which didn't really work, or just giving the pill direct(very difficult). Tonight I crushed the pill up into a powder, put in water solution, then sucked it up with an old syringe from vet. Seems to work but difficult. It would have to be hyperthyroid since that's what methimazole is used for. Also, cats don't get (very, very rare) hypothyroid except if something goes wrong in treatment, such as an overdose. I strongly suggest you join the Yahoo group linked in the main description of the video.
Hello, I appreciate your video on the transdermal methimazole & though my cat was on the click pen and is slightly a different method, the cleaning process is the same. You will recall that he had an allergic reaction when I used the pen and they contacted the mfgr and they said that witch hazel should not be used because it prevents the meds from not being used properly. They recommended just warm water. Happy to say that my cat's T4 was.5 and dose lowered to 2.5mg (in pill form).
Witch Hazel prevents the med from being absorbed properly? That's absolutely absurd unless you cleaned the ears right before applying the med. Within a very short time there would be nothing left on the skin to cause a problem, and it's used by many people. As long as warm water works for someone, however, fine and dandy. Good that the dose has been lowered since.5 is into the hypothryoid range and potentially dangerous.
I agree with you about the witch hazel preventing the meds from being effective, but that's what they told the vet. They also said that witch hazel causes dryness since it is an astringent. I was switching ears just like your video instructed. When I bought him into the vet the very first time, his T4 was very high and they had to put him on 5mg right away to save him. They had told me he was in very bad shape, he also suffers from asthma. He's very well now thank to God and many prayers!
Saying witch hazel drys the skin is quite simply bullsh!t. It actually improves skin quailty. The alcohol used as a preservative in most witch hazel can have a drying effect since it evaporates so quickly, but it only becomes a problem if used too quickly. Those people were just trying to protect themselves by blaming anything except the pen.
I agree! I think the pen is a great RX for owners who have a problem giving their pets pills. Lucky for me, my boy doesn't mind. My vet was also very surprised that he had a reaction to the gel and he is the first cat in her practice that had this problem! I told her that is mine and my cat's misfortune. Hope no one else has that problem. Anyway, his ears are healing fine. Thank you again for your vid. Had I not cleaned his ears, it would had been worse!

Actually, I hate the twist pens and prefer the.5ml or 1ml syringes. And the reaction was more likely to be to the base the methimazole was in, which is something that can be changed. Modern gel bases are mostly very good, but reactions are still known. If one doesn't work, another usually will.

Forrest, my cat is now showing loss of small hair patches where I can see the skin. He's been on the methimazole for about 2mos. Vet said she thought it was a bug bite (he's indoors) & wanted to give him a 2 weeks shot of antibiotic. I said no & told her I would treat the area with bacitracin. After two days, the small area where she first saw the irritation is a little better, but this morning I saw the paw had no hair. Do you think it's the methimazole? If so, will the hair loss/itching stop?
It's not likely to be the methimazole, but could be a behavioral side effect or even physical side effect of the hyperT itself...or completely unrelated. You might try an antihistimine, such as ceterizine (brand name Zyrtec in the US or Zirtec in the UK). There are some seasonal allergies that will cause itching, even sores. If the bacitracin and ceterizine don't work, ask about cortisone shot..if really necessary, steroids can be a problem (incommon but known) in cats. Checked for fleas?
Thank you for making this video because my vet didn't give me any instructions on caring for my cat's ears while using this type of rx. Firstly, I will never use this on my cat again. The treatment, cleaning with witch hazel every 3 days left his ears raw with caked on meds. This is going to take some time to heal and I hate that this happened to him. Secondly, it was too much of a mess. I had to keep track on paper when to switch ears! OMGosh!! He's a good pill taker so my vet was pushing this.
If cleaning with witch hazel left his ears raw and caked on medicine, something else was going on...possibly a poor quality base or a dose using too many ml. Not all cats can handle the witch hazel, but medicine caking on despite cleaning shouldn't happen.
The vet told me to do two revolutions per day per ear. The dose was 5MG/0.05ML. What do you mean by poor quality base. The witch hazel or his ears. If you mean his ears weren't clean, they were. The witch hazel is witch hazel bought at Wal-Mart.
The gel base the methimazole is in varies, and some absorb better than others. Since you were using the twist pens rather than syringes, there were other potential problems. Results with the pens are erratic. I don't know how many ml of gel were dispensed with the two revolutions, so I can't comment on whether or not the amount of gel was an issue. After two treatments with cleaning his ears with witch hazel and distilled water, his ears are returning to their normal look. It was interesting to note that the tips of his ears folded downward. Upon closer inspection, it appeared the scabbing was built up much more in that area causing the tip to weigh down. I just can't believe I put my poor boy through that! Thank you again for your video!
I assume you used the applicator on the twist pen to apply the gel. Sounds like it was pushing gel up to that part of the ear rather than spreading it around. That would not only cause build up but seriously reduce absorption of the med.
I was never informed about ear gel she prescribes methimazola 5mg cut into 4 then give twice daily...when order the internet vet would not authorized a med she has been taking for 2 yrs I can get Soma 350 mg for me without my Dr. I do not have $ for a vet right now I was in a car accident so my Mako has been without for 2 weeks how do I get this gel? Please can you help me.Thank you. I am not taking my diabetic meds in strike for my Mako..outrageous this vet. thank you 4 ur help.
You would need a prescription for the transdermal just the same as the pills. I strongly suggest that you join the Yahoo group linked in the description, and someone there may be able to help. Members sometimes have medicine they can share. Meanwhile, take your diabetes medicine. It won't help Mako if you get sick.
The transdermal is extremely expensive and it is (that I know of) not available online. I order from vetdepot.com the methimazola 5mg for $25 + $4.99 shipping for 100 pills. My vet charges $55!! You do need his vet's approval which they fax over and it takes about a week. I agree with Forrest, take YOUR diabetes meds because you will get sicker and Mako will be sadden not having you there. I hope you can find some savings on Mako's meds :). There are various places that you can get the transdermal via mail order, some good, some not. Central Compounding in NJ has an excellent reputation. Normally, a 1 month supply of transdermal from most sources (local or online) will be $20-45. As usual, there are places that charge absurdly high rates. Thanks so much for this! Really helpful. I was lost when I got the Carbimazole paste and was told to apply on my 16yrs old cat's ears and your video really provided me with the confidence... really appreciate it :). Thumbs up for this video!! We have just started using the cream today for our very skinny and very hungry (all the time) newly diagnosed kitteh. I can't wait to see him gain weight and look as healthy as your cat does, like he used to. I will try to join the group. Thanks for the video!!Thank you, Forrest, for your precious advice and, most of all, for the calm and positivity you convey to me. My 12y old cat, Romeo, is taking 1/4 Tapazole twice a day. In Italy transdermal metimazole is not available, nor iodine 131. Romeo was diagnosed Hypert. last december, I try to take care of him at my best, your calm approach helps me a lot.
Glad I can be of some help. You really should join the Yahoo group, too. There's a link in the description of the video. They can help with many of the issues related to hyperthyroidism. It's also simply good to talk with people who understand what you are dealing with. Forrest.

Hi Forrest, can you please confirm me that I joined the group? I'm not sure I clicked the right link. How can I keep in touch with other people with the same situation? Is your kitty ok after 2 years you posted this video?
I see your membership has been confirmed. Good idea to introduce yourself and Romeo. Give us his history and mention any issues that may concern you even if they don't appear to directly apply to hyperthyroid. We're interested in the whole cat from what goes in one end to what comes out the other. You should see the e-mail address in the welcoming e-mail (assuming Yahoo sent it). Just in case it's feline-hyperT(at)yahoogroups(d-ot)com And I can't write it in the usual way here.
many many thanks for this, Coco is newly diagnosed and altho' I have had no problem giving it so far... your video was VERY helpful, and confirms how I am doing it, but the cleaning also was helpful to view, what a wonderful cat is Lancelot, a real 'model'.
Glad to help. Even though things I going well, I do strongly suggest joining the Yahoo group I mentioned in the description (link there, too). If the vet has started with a dose over 1.25mg twice a day, there could be problems.my 17 and a half year old female has been on this for a week now. She's o.k with getting it.Thanks for the cleaning tip. The treats, she's not into. She's never liked cat treats and I've tried many. So, I just give her a kiss on the forehead~~~. I hope the dose given is no more than 1.25mg twice a day. I strongly suggest you join the Yahoo group for hyperthyroid cats: pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/fe-line-hyperT/.
As per my personal experience, If you have an older cat with increased appetite, but also with weight loss then they likely have hyperthyroidism.

That's true, but hyperthyroidism can also present with many other symptoms, including a decrease in appetite.
thank you so much for this video, you explain the procedure so well, I think that today for the first dose I may play you in the background so Zunie feels as calm as your kitty and does as well!! Thanks!!!Glad you liked it. Be sure dose isn't too high. Many vets still start too high. Usually should be 1.25mg twice a day and retest in 3 weeks. Join the Yahoo group for help pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/fe-line-hyperT/.
This was great. I'll add one thing I've learned about preventing the stick from sticking and causing a dosing issue. Pull back on the plunger first. You'll need to be attentive to where the med begins to dispense once you start forward to insure your dose is correct. Thanks again for your time and effort.

He stays very close to me. Probably this Thursday we will get the blood work to see if red and white cells have come back up. If so, we have to decide on an alternative way to get the meds in him: gel in the ear, thyroid removal surgery, or the iodine surgery. Was glad to come across your video and am going to join the yahoo group right now. Also going to share the yahoo group with our vets. Thank you. Cheryl.
About a week ago, Boo started the bleeding (side affect for a small 5% of cats on methamazole). Bleeding is in his mouth/forhead/and an ear - hematomas formed and started bleeding. Needless to stay - it has been scary...had a few blood tests run to rule out things like a clotting issue but both his WBC and RBC are very low. Right now he is off methamazole pill - to let it clear his system and redo blood work..He is depressed and has lost some of his appetite.Hi Forrest, Thank you and Lancelot for taking the time to create this informative video. Our kitty, Boo Bear, is 12yo. We have MANY cats but this one has always been so peronable. Two years ago, after being diagnosed with Hyper T, we had to start Boo on the methimzole pill. We are futunate to have multiple vets at our Three Notch Veterinarian Hospital who keep themselves up to date and/or do research/consults as issues arise.I really enjoyed this video. It makes hyperthyroidism a little less scary. Thank you for the time you put into this video. :).
Glad to help. Really do sugges joining the feline-hyperT group on Yahoo. Super information. Hyper T is complicated. That group has been around for over 10 years and is the largest accumulation of information and experience you'll find.

Great video bringing up some of the cleaning issues and I love the idea of using cots instead of gloves, less waste. Thank you for remind of the occasional cleaning after several apps. Lancelot was a very good model. Thank you!
