Comments about this video:

WOW...amazing Video...wish I had found this a long time ago, because I have been taking a liquid Kelp Supplement since many years every single day...and now I am fat, and tired and can't get weight of me even with huge calorie restriction... I am going to stop taking this stop right now…I wonder if that was the reason I messed up my Thyroid..??

I have celiac disease and my function med doctor feels that my thyroid is low - my TSH is 3.25 but my parathyroid is like 17 so its in range for both. I was givien an iodine drops to add once a day, like 75mcg. Am I doing the wrong thing then? Its not like I am taking an excessive amount. just some supplements that have a small amount of iodine and the drops.

Dr., Are you saying there is no such thing as a minimum daily requirement of iodine? Are you saying that anyone who takes in iodine will trigger an autoimmune response? Are you saying that a zero intake of iodine will not result in any problems?
I make enough T3, but have a conversion issue, and don't know why. Been on Levo for a year and a half, and feel like crap...eat healthy, IMO. Any information will help. I have reade, reade, reade. So what about a person that has no thyroid issues, is in good general health? I am 26 years old with no known health problems. Is it ok for me to start supplementing with Iodine? I have been reading about its benefits. My TSH was 37 and when I went in my doctor diagnosed me with Hashimoto's and started me on synthroid. I take 75 mcg daily. She said the this would make me hypothyroid and keep my body from killing my thyroid. Is this correct?I have been on thyroid glandular for many years and it generally works for me, but I have taken Lugol's on three separate occasions for a few days and it made my body freeze to the point if I didn't get off it I would die. I have some old literature from Standard Process that says that iodine is used for HYPERthyroidism because it quickly brings it down. That was exactly my experience and it nearly killed me. That is the absolute truth. I have not been tested for Hashimoto's but I will.
what about spirulina, kelp, algae and other sea vegetables? are they as dangerous as an iodine supplement?

I've read that if you supplement with selenium and not iodine simultaneously you will create an imbalance. is this true.

I tested borderline low T3 two years ago. I was confirmed non Hashimoto's, so I began taking one drop of Lugol's 5% per day, and feel so much better. Sure hope this doesn't mean it's going to GIVE me Hashimoto's - are you sure that people that react badly to iodine are people that already had Hashimoto's??!
Ive never been tested for any autoimmune disorder but have hypothyroidism i want to take the iodine to see if itll help can i go ahead and rish it and jusT LISTEN TO MY BODY ABOUT IT if i feel worse then stop taking it of course>?So getting iodine from iodized salt, in small amounts, is still okay? Just no high dose iodine supps? Assuming you do not have Hashis.
so how do i get rid of my goiter? all my docs say my thyroid is normal. how do i get rid of the goiter? how do i get rid of the goiter? how do i get rid of the goiter?
Likewise I feel Dr. Bernstein is misinformed and refuses to acknowledge that iodine IS, without a doubt, dangerous. I didn't say iodine is GUARANTEED to cause Hashimoto's. Nor am I saying that iodine might not be useful in some few cases of Hashi's. But I've never seen it helpful when the person has TPO antibodies.how can i b tested for hashimotos thyroiditis? ive been taking synthroid for years and now my hair is falling our and shriveling up, hot flashes and leg cramps. and if i do have hashimmotos what can i do about it? i bought a juicer today and want to juice the right foods for my health. i eat mostly organic and have been vegitarian for less than one year now. thanks!what if the mechanism is a bit different? my thinking. low iodine suppresses immune response. ok, now you may be able to tolerate toxic food. take wheat for example that has been studied causing an autoimmune attack on the thyroid. now you add high dose (> 1mg) iodine supplements. suddenly you have autoimmune troubles. another thing. you need selenium too. no selenium no T3. i find it easy to believe your clinical observations but hard to believe it's truly iodine to blame.
Appreciate your comment, but it's definitely iodine. The literature is overwhelming and I've seen it personally time and time again.

i don't doubt there is plenty in the literature. but the literature has made some whopper mistakes in the past. the lipid hypothesis is one...and now the FDAs stance on GMO food. both imo huge mistakes that aren't getting corrected any time soon. i still think it's more complicated then a reaction to iodine. i had my thyroid tested about 3 years ago. it was in the normal range (by US standards) but low. now taking 3mg iodine daily and feel great. i wonder what a new thyroid test would show.

Hi Csn you provide the references for the studies you referred to on iodine triggering Hashimotoo's? thanks.

I was just diagnosed w/ Hashimoto. I am on a low-carb diet for almost a year now (initially, for weight problems) and pretty much avoided gluten too. My endocrinologist told me to remove green nuts, spirulina and algae from my diet, because they are high in iodine. My BIG issue is that NUTS are a very important part of my diet: I eat 30-40grams of raw, unsalted nuts (pistachio, cashew, pecan, walnuts, brazilian nuts) on a daily basis. I thought they were healthy&helping me. What should I do? Ty.

All he means to say is get yourself checked for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis first before starting to take Iodine supplement. Dont dislike this video guys. Its not meant to scare you all but rather help from a knowledgeable experienced person.
what if you don't have low thyroid, but you want to take iodine to possibly help with weight loss, would you still consider iodine a trigger for an autoimmune disease in me?
I have been sheddding hair and having hairloss at temples and bottom of back. I learned that when I take iodized salt it gets better, but I started taking way too much. About a tablespoon a day and this is been going on for 6 days. My hair is coming back on the sides but what should I do. Stop taking the salt altogether or just take like a pinch a day from now on?? Please help I am a 23 yr old male.

This is terrible advice. Taking iodine for my low thyroid as well as for my overall health has been one of the best decisions i have ever made. If you dont take iodine while on thyroid meds your chances of cancer go way up. Iodine is crucial for health especially if you have hypothyroidism. I feel warmer, more energy and so much clearer.. so dont go telling people not to take iodine. Iodine was the missing link for me in improving my thyroid condition. Your advice is irresponsible in many ways.

Then you probalby do not have Hashimoto's. Please listen closely to the message. Iodine can trigger Hashimoto's. Iodine can worsen Hashimoto's. But, Hashimoto's is not the ONLY cause of hypothyroidism. Therefore, some people will be able to take Iodine. The vast majority will not.
Geez, well this is disappointing!! So are you saying Dr. Brownstein has it all wrong? What about low dose Iodine? What about getting rid of halogens? bromine, etc.
What I'm saying is simply this: Iodine IS a trigger for Autoimmune Thyroidits irrefutably. Taking Iodine without knowing if you have Hashimoto's is a RISK. And, one should be checked for Hashimoto's after one has been taking iodine for a time.
What if you have been tested and know you do not have autoimmune thyroid disease and are hypothyroidism without known cause? As a side note I have many of the symptoms of PCOS and am estrogen dominant per testing done under MD.
i'm not a doctor but go get yourself checked and spend whatever you need to spend on your treatment. money is no object. if some permanent damage results from your low thyroid levels, you will be up the creek for life.

What is the mechanism behind iodine's cause of hashimoto's? Are there any studies to support this theory?
Dear Clark, I have been numerous supplements and have had a handful of thyroid tests all of which except the first one came out "normal". I have different symptomes which make it harder to lean towards a direction for treatment, serritonin/dopamine, inflammation, blood sugar problems, all of which can be linked to a poor life style prior. Without much progress over the past 2 years, I have been taking nascent iodine for a week and feel better however I am worried about the risks, any thoughts?
I wouldn't take iodine unless I had been tested for Hashimoto's Thyroidiits, the most common cause of "low" thyroid. And...the "normal" levels you mention may be within the lab's ranges, and still not be healthy for you.

Without question, the first thing you have to determine is the CAUSE of your "low' thyroid. The most common cause by far is an autoimmune attack called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. You need to find a doctor who knows how to test for this...and the other 23 possible causes.

I;ve been supplementing Iodine for months and I feel better than I've ever felt. Thats good enough for me.
